In order to maintain the working environment of the people working there during the reconstruction and to realize the value of the renewal, it was a requirement that the existing openings not be touched – neither made larger nor made smaller. As a result, new horizontal lines were added 3-dimensionally to the plane wall surface on which the single windows were aligned, and this was the only operation that was carried out. These 3-dimensional horizontal lines not only renewed the external appearance, but also broadened the window side spaces and field of view, formed efficient ventilation and smoke discharge paths, etc., contributing to the improvement of the internal environment. There were many restrictions on the reconstruction, but the requirements on completion were no different from those for a new building. In this case a newness that was not there when the building was newly built was required, and the aim was to obtain the maximum effect from few operations. Renewal is overlaying something new onto something old, and so new expressions are possible. (Yasushi Kawatate)DETAIL SECTION S=1:6024Works
