薩摩固有の現代的な和の空間Japanese environment that is modern and yet uniquely satsuma薩摩がもつ地理的・歴史的意義から日本文化と異文化との調和と差異を意識して、薩摩固有の現代的な和の空間を創造した。高さ10mの吹抜け空間をもつ多目的ホールを中心に、1階には美術品が展示された回廊が、2階には連なる3つの展示室が四周を取り囲む形式としている。池に面してガラスと可動式木格子のスクリーンで内部を包み込み、柔らかな光を取り入れながら、水面が演出する時の移ろいを内部から感じられるように計画した。また格子は見込みを薄紅色で着色され、様々な表情を内外に醸し出し、神社仏閣とは異なる艶やかさを演出する。(原 弘)With an awareness of the harmony of and distinctions with Japanese and foreign cultures, a modern Japanese environment that was uniquely Satsuma in nature was created, based on Satsuma's geographical and historical significance. The complex centers on a multipurpose hall with a 10-meter-high ceiling and has a corridor on the 1st floor in which art objects are exhibited and, on the 2nd floor, a perimeter enclosed by a row of three exhibition rooms. The interior facing the pond is enclosed by glass and a movable wooden lattice screen, designed to admit soft lighting while providing the interior with a view of the passage of time as reflected in the surface of the water. The lattice is also colored pale crimson to foster a variety of expressions both inside and out, providing a sheen that is very different from that of a shrine or temple.
