The proposal was to make the site as a whole into an open plaza for students. In most gymnasiums, light is admitted from the upper part of the walls. In this design, however, a wide opening was created in the wall at floor level so as to not block the line of sight. This creates continuity between the arena and the outside environment and provides a sense of openness, making it seem as if the activities are taking place outdoors. In addition, the entire facility design is based on one rule: that all of the new structures should be enclosed by white plane surfaces. These planes gently link the interior, semi-enclosed exterior and exterior, giving students a sense of belonging with regard to all of these spaces. (Masaaki Hisatake)10Works
