It was 38 years ago in 1974 that Takenaka Corporation established a base in Singapore, which is located directly below the equator. For this small-city state that became fully independent 47 years ago relying on foreign investments and tourist resources, active nation building was a crucial lifeline, and Takenaka Corporation has played a major role in building this city. Starting with Changi International Airport Terminal 1 which was completed in 1981, we have been constantly engaged in major projects that contribute to Singaporean society. The high-quality of our construction has become widely known among clients, design firms, and others associated with the industry, and in recent years our design capabilities and engineering capabilities have been highly evaluated in addition to our construction technology. Over the past 10 years, the number of iconic projects that symbolize the city that we have been awarded has increased; implemented either independently by us through "Design & Build" the same as in Japan, or by the Singaporean unique style of design and build referred to as "Semi-Design & Build" in which the work is done in cooperation with the concept architect. Ten years ago, back in 2003 at the time of the Changi International Airport Terminal 2 refurbishment project, we only had two designers from Takenaka. Since then there has been a succession of major construction projects such as La Salle College of the Arts, the Singapore Flyer, the world's largest ferris wheel, the headquarters building for the major securities company Kim Eng, and Changi International Airport Terminal 1 refurbishment project, etc. During this time, the number of designers in our design staff based in Singapore has grown to 13. At present we are engaged in two major projects. One of them is a national project for the conservation and adaptive reuse of the City Hall and the former Supreme Court buildings to transform them into the National Art Gallery, Singapore. The buildings will be connected by a glass and steel roof, which will provide visitors with magnificent views of the city and create a new rooftop exhibition space that can hold large works of art. Connecting bridges also allow visitors to move easily between the two buildings. The Gallery is scheduled to open in 2015. We are also engaged in the construction of Market Street Tower, the world's first ultra high-rise office building provided with green balconies based on environmental sustainability, which is scheduled to be completed in the same year, and which aims to obtain Singapore's highest energy-efficiency award "Green Mark Platinum". The City's Iconic Buildings by Takenaka Singapore30Topic
