The design concept was to create a campus with interweaving paths that functions as a place for comprehensive learning, in which "knowledge" is communicated through ties with the local community and collaboration with society. The design is modeled on the design of the city of Kyoto itself and the merchant houses with their tsuboniwa (inner garden) and toriniwa (long corridor passing through the house). The clear-cut design has main passageways that pass through the entire campus and smaller passageways that intersect these main routes in various ways.
