It was constructed on the same site as the historic Kawaramachi catholic church (the Cathedral of St. Francis Xavier). The "facade with depth" is created by a spatial experience that guides visitors toward the interior and a landscape formed of multiple enveloping depths and shadows. The building has four gardens at different levels: (1) the front courtyard that forms a landscape along Kawaramachi-dori together with the historic church, (2) a "passage garden" that is designed to resemble the passageway in a Kyoto machiya and leads to the interior, (3) a small inner garden with a view of the sky during the changing seasons in Kyoto, and (4) a rooftop bar with a panoramic view of the Higashiyama landscape. These four gardens have been provided as the link between the hotel and the urban environment of Kyoto, with the aim of providing visitors with a different Kyoto landscape and a rewarding experience each time they visit, thereby encouraging them to return.
