Completed 3D printing of “Foresting Architecture” to be provided within the Ground of the Expo 2025 Osaka-KansaiRecognized by Guinness World RecordsTM as the Largest 3D-Printed biodegradable building (monolithic)
December 10, 2024
Takenaka Corporation (President: Masato Sasaki) has completed two structures, Foresting Architecture, which have been built using a 3D printer since August of this year at the Ground Plaza on the site of the 2025 Japan International Exposition (Osaka-Kansai Expo).
Foresting Architecture is a temporary structure that will be provided at the Osaka-Kansai Expo site during the Expo period (April 13 to October 13, 2025) for visitors to use for rest and other activities. The building is a fusion of state-of-the-art technology and hand-crafted construction.
On October 25, Foresting Architecture was recognized by Guinness World RecordsTM as the “largest 3D-printed biodegradable building (monolithic).” Exterior and greening work to affix washi (Japanese paper) to the structure will be undertaken in the future. In addition to washi made by traditional craftsmen, washi “seed paper” made at a workshop with plant seeds in it was combined with washi made at a welfare facility. Project complection is expencted next April.

About Foresting Architecture
Foresting Architecture was selected as the Grand Prize winner for its Seeds Paper Pavilion in the Takenaka Group's Idea Proposal Competition for Pavilions at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, which was held between 2020 and 2021 for employees of the Takenaka Group.
The proposal depicted architecture of the future in which the structure created by everyone becomes a seed that will grow into a forest when its use is finished, rather than one that will become waste at the end of its use.
Then a full-scale technical development system to materialize this idea was established, and in May of last year, testing began with a large-scale 3D printer at the Takenaka Research & Development Institute in Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture. In April of this year, a full-scale output test was successful.
The Seeds Paper Pavilion at Osaka-Kansai Expo, named Foresting Architecture, is a temporary structure that can be used for rest (in accordance with Article 85, Paragraph 7 of the Building Standards Act for the 2025 Japan International Exposition) with a diameter of 4.65 meters and a height of 2.95 meters. Construction began in August at the Ground Plaza, which is located at the Expo site.
