Kobe Shukugawa Gakuin University

Hyogo 2007

This is the stage one work for a four-year university, for the education of tourism professionals at Shukugawa Gakuin, which opened on Port Island in Kobe. The theme for the design was for an enclosure holding rich space inside a compact and simple volume. An open space called the "Canyon" has been constructed in the center axis of the site, which has a frontage of 80 meters and a depth of 300 meters, reaching down to the sea. As the building rises up, a spatial feeling of connection between the Canyon and the interior space can be felt. It has also been constructed as an element presenting the tracking of the sunlight over a day, and along with the movement of the sun, there are dramatic changes in the light and shadows in the Canyon.
