Tobata C Block Improvement Project

Fukuoka 2006

This project involved the unified development of an entire block, made up of the Tobata City Office, a day-care center for children, a community action center for the disabled, local government public housing for senior citizens, public rental housing, private housing for sale, and a facilities complex for senior citizens. Large-scale rooftop greening in the center has enabled the creation a rooftop space hill called the "Fureai-no-Oka," designed to encourage interaction between the various generations. Stair-shaped louvers have been used in the façade of the western side of the front of the city office to enable the sun to shine through the risers into the lobby area. A gentle slope connects the park at the front to the "Fureai-no-Oka," and during events this area can also be used for seating an audience of 2,000. The feeling of unification with the hill is strengthened through the use of a color plan based on earthen colors for the building exterior.
