Hakutaka Rokusuien

Hyogo 2001

Opened in the sake brewing area of Nada, this complex contains an exhibition hall for this refined sake maker, as well as restaurants and retail outlets. The simple, open and natural exterior consists of a large tiled-roof with long eaves, plaster walls, second-floor windows with grating, and protruding grating, in an attempt to carry on the traditions of the "history and memories of the town." Centered on a huge beam-structured, two-floor atrium with earth-floor passageway, the interior has a relaxed atmosphere, aimed at a dignified spatial design created by the traditional roof truss. Some old materials were brought in, making the most of recycling wood resources.
