Satsuma Denshokan

Kagoshima 2007

This project involved the construction of Satsuma Denshokan, an accommodation facility and multi-purpose hall, constructed in the pine forest around the Japanese inn, Ibusuki Hakusuikan, facing Ibusuki Bay. With the theme of realizing the property owner's desire of "by coming here, Satsuma can be understood," the construction allows for a relaxing time surrounded by artifacts that are one with the flavor of the culture of Satsuma. The exterior blends in with the natural surroundings, using a combination of steel roof trusses and RC construction, allowing for the realization of a clay-tiled large roof and a superb large space under the multi-level, half-hipped roof of the main building. The interior is a conscious mix of both Japanese and foreign culture that allows for the presentation of true Satsuma cultural design.
